Cabinet Knobs Vs. Cabinet Pulls Vs. Cabinet Appliance Pulls

Access Residential Hardware offers three different types of cabinet hardware: cabinet knobs, cabinet pulls, and cabinet appliance pulls. Each of these three types of hardware has a distinct look and function. A description of each of the different types of cabinet hardware can be found below.

  • Cabinet knobs: Cabinet knobs have smaller profiles than cabinet pulls (cabinet handles) and tend to be less expensive than cabinet pulls. They require only one drill hole and can be used for both drawers and cabinets.
  • Cabinet pulls: Cabinet pulls are larger than cabinet knobs. The additional material comes at a higher price point, but cabinet pulls also offer easier grip and more of a bolder stylistic statement. Cabinet pulls or handles have two ends and require two drill holes. Cabinet pulls can also be used for both drawers and cabinets.
  • Cabinet appliance pulls: Cabinet appliance pulls may look identical to cabinet pulls, but they are larger and heavier than normal cabinet pulls. Cabinet appliance pulls also come packaged with heavier-duty screws to withstand the wear and tear that comes with being mounted to heavier appliances. Cabinet appliance pulls are typically mounted to appliances like dishwashers and fridges.

Considerations When Purchasing Cabinet Hardware

Determine The Number Of Hardware Pieces Needed

The first thing you need to know before purchasing hardware is the quantity of hardware you’ll need. Count the number of cabinets and drawers that will need knobs or pulls and make sure to keep track of the number of knobs and pulls you’ll need separately.

You may want to order a few more knobs or handles than you need to have spares in case you need them. Styles can change overtime and lines can be discontinued. It’s cheaper to have a few spares on-hand than it is to have to order new hardware for all of your cabinets, because the style you purchased is no longer available.

Determine Size For Cabinet Pulls

Size can be a concern for cabinet pulls if you’re replacing cabinet hardware. It’s always easier to use existing mounting holes than it is to drill new holes. You’ll want to measure the distance between the two holes to find your center-to-center measurement. Cabinet pulls can vary in length, so you’ll be looking for pulls that match the center-to-center measurement of your previous cabinet pulls.

Cabinet Hardware Installation Tips

The above video walks you through how to install cabinet hardware if you plan to install your own. There are few tips and tricks to keep in mind as you begin the installation process to make the job easier:

  1. You may want to test knob or pull placement before drilling holes. Adhesive putty can be very helpful for this purpose. You can use putty to temporarily attach your knobs and pulls. This will give you an opportunity to determine if your placement is centered and at the correct height.
  2. You can buy premade hardware templates to ensure consistency with all of our drill holes, but you can also create your own templates for free. You can use a sheet of cardboard and drill a hole in the cardboard where your cabinet drill holes where be. You can then just overlay the cardboard onto your cabinets to mark the holes.
  3. Reusing existing holes is ideal if you’re replacing cabinet hardware. If drill holes need to change with new hardware you can use a mounting plate to hide old holes. Mounting plates can be purchased at your local hardware store.
  4. Cabinet knobs can twist and loosen with time. You can prevent your cabinet knobs from moving by spreading a drop of super glue on the back of the knob before installation. The glue will hold the knob in place with use.
