Passage Vs. Privacy Vs. Dummy Door Levers
There are three different types of interior door handles that Access Residential Hardware offers: passage, privacy, and dummy. Each of these three types of door handles are defined below.
- Passage door handles: Passage doors have a latch (you’ll twist the handle to open the door), but they do not provide any locking functionality. Passage handles are used for common rooms where privacy isn’t required. They are often found on hallway, entertainment, and closet room doors.
- Privacy door handles: Privacy door handles have a lock on one side of the door to control the door’s latch. Privacy door handles are used for rooms where privacy may be desired. Privacy door handles are commonly used for bathroom, bedroom, and office doors.
- Dummy door handles: Dummy door handles have no latch, so you only have to pull the handle to open the door instead of twisting the handle. Dummy door handles are commonly used for pantry doors, linen cupboards, wardrobes and double doors (where only one side of the door needs a latched handle).
If you’d like to learn more about the differences between these types of door handles, we have a full blog post outlining the differences between passage and privacy doors.

Door Lever Handing
Certain interior door handles on our site have an option to select handing. Door handing is a term used to describe the direction a door swings when it opens. Doors that swing open to the left are left-handed doors while doors that swing open to the right are right-handed. Handing of a door is always determined by how the door is opened from the outside. The outside is considered the hallway side (or the room side for cabinets) for interior doors.
A left-handed door would require a handle with left handling and a right handed door would require a handle with right handling. You want to avoid installing a handle with the incorrect handling on your door, because the handle will then be upside down. If a handle does not have a dropdown option for handing, then it can work with a door swinging in either direction.
Selecting The Right Fit For Your Door
Many of our door handles will give you the option to choose between a 2⅜” backset and a 2¾” backset. The backset measurement is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the door’s bore hole. You’ll want to measure your doors before placing an order to make sure your new handles will fit your doors correctly. Door handles that don’t have a dropdown for backset have an adjustable backset that can fit both 2⅜” and a 2¾” backsets.
